Report 2

Date: 2/21/13

Time: 12:52-1:42

Grade: 11th Grade AP English

  • Upon entry of the class, I observed the setup of the class. The desks and chairs were set up in 3 aisles and 5 rows with 2 chairs per row. There are 29 students in the class. The students do not wear uniform. I was placed in the back of the classroom where I am not a distraction and where I can observe everything that is going on. The classroom has both a white board and a SMART board next to each other. The classroom is not decorated like most classrooms. There are 4 posters on the wall which the students use to keep track of the extra-credit that the students receive. The teacher has great control of the class and seems to have a great relationship with the students.
  • The teacher posts reading assignments online. The students were given group work and were put in groups. Each student moves their furniture into their groups and immediately begin their work.  During class an announcement is given over the loud speaker regarding some deadlines for school events and senior events and SAT prep deadlines and sign up. The teacher encourages the students to interact with the text by annotating. The teacher goes from group to group answering questions and observing the work being done and giving suggestions.
  • The students are very interactive with each other. They seem to be interacting with the text and using good vocabulary to answer the questions while still using their vocabulary words from their homework. The students came up with very interesting interpretations of the text and also expressed their interpretation of the text. The teacher encourages all groups into expressing their opinions. She (the teacher) is also very open to their opinions. The students also made connections from the poem to other past real life events possibly from another subject and/or their own personal lives.
